Description

Rodeo was painted during Warren’s early Dubuffet, Red Grooms period in which he pokes fun at his own beloved Texas and its lone star imagery of oilmen, cowboys and Texas Longhorns. The artist writes: “It is our ability to look and laugh at ourselves that makes us what we are.” This painting won “best of show” in an exhibtion at the Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston and is one of the only remaining works from Warren’s early regionalist period painted in Houston before he attended graduate school at the University of Texas San Antonio. This major painting also contains much of the imagery that will resurface through the years in Warren’s most important works–the Texas businessman, the bull and the Texas longhorn as well as humor and a fascination with outsider art..
