This is from a series of drawings of mechanical forms mad during the past year or so. The idea came from a mechanical drawing class I took in high school back when we were all supposed to be engineers so we could beat the Russians to the moon. Some of my closest friends did become engineers or scientists. I was hopeless in that sphere but I was valued for funny, little “doodles.” Nonetheless, I was fascinated by the odd mechanical parts we had to draw in class: splines, brackets and stuff. And so, I started drawing these still-lifes based on my memory of those shapes. They are abstractions from memory, this one on tinted pastel paper.
